Cities Without Number Character Builder
A free, browser-based character builder for Cities Without Number, Sine Nomine’s cyberpunk game. It covers the whole of chargen — backgrounds, edges, foci, skills, contacts, chrome and gear — keeps System Strain and your credit balance honest, and exports a filled CWN character sheet when you are done.
Free, in your browser, no account needed. See what’s free and what isn’t.
What the Cities Without Number builder does
Edges, foci and the Underdog rule
Take your two edges — or three, if your attribute modifiers qualify you for the bonus Underdog edge, which the builder works out and enforces for you, lasting cost and all.
Cyberware with the strain maths right
Install chrome against your real System Strain budget, including the cyber-eye and cyber-ear halving rule that catches people out by hand. The book’s five sample packages install in one click.
Contacts as a first-class step
Build the people who owe you favours during chargen, not as an afterthought scribbled in the margin.
A hacking rig that runs
Pick a cyberdeck and a Verb/Subject program loadout at creation, then use the run console in play: pair a verb with a legal subject, spend Access, and watch ongoing programs hold CPU.
Drones and vehicles
Nine drone chassis with fittings and mods, ten vehicle hulls with weapons and modifications, plus the book’s prebuilt examples. Purchases spend your credits; repairs cost what they cost.
Export to the official CWN sheet
Fill Sine Nomine’s form-fillable Cities Without Number sheet — cyberware, contacts, decks, vehicles and all — or export the styled sheet or raw JSON.
How to make a Cities Without Number character
-
Set your attributes
Roll or assign, and see straight away whether you qualify for the bonus Underdog edge.
-
Pick a background
Backgrounds grant their free skill and their growth or learning picks.
-
Choose edges and foci
Edges and foci are applied together with the free gear and skills they grant — the Hacker edge hands you your jack and a scrap deck, and the driving foci hand you a vehicle budget.
-
Line up your contacts
Name the fixers, cops and family who will answer the phone at 3am.
-
Buy chrome and gear
Install cyberware against your strain limit and spend your starting credits on weapons, armour, pharma and kit.
-
Take it to the table
The sheet tracks HP, strain, credits, your deck, your drones and your vehicles, and exports to PDF whenever you want paper.
The GM half of the city
Cities Without Number is a GM-heavy game, and the campaign tools mirror that. The worldbuilding suite builds a city top-down — world, region, district, gang — with the book’s generator tables behind every field, a per-field visibility toggle so you can share exactly as much as the players have earned, and a Markdown round-trip so you can write the whole city in your own editor and import it.
- District traits, gangs, megacorps and named NPCs, each field rerollable on its own
- Schemes, mission hooks, payouts and a team Heat score
- Session prep with its own import/export format
- A shared undo/redo stack across the whole prep sheet
Magic, if your city has any
The deluxe magical edges are supported: Spellcaster picks a starting repertoire, Summoner gets its pools, and the Graced spend art points — with the mutual exclusions and the cyberware Effort penalty enforced, because chrome and magic do not mix cheaply.
Cities Without Number character builder FAQ
Is this Cities Without Number character builder free?
Yes. Every rule, every builder step and every GM tool is free, with no account required — characters save in your browser by default. Making an account adds cloud sync across your devices, and an optional paid tier only adds cosmetic flair and extra cloud storage. Nothing about the rules is behind a paywall.
Does it track System Strain from cyberware?
Yes, and it applies the halving rule for eye and ear modifications installed behind cybereyes or cyberears, which is the step most hand-built characters get wrong. Sample cyberware packages install their remaining pieces in one click.
Can I build a cyberdeck and run the hacking rules?
Yes. Hacking-capable characters pick a deck and a Verb/Subject loadout during chargen, and the sheet has a run console that validates which verbs can target which subjects, spends Access and holds CPU for ongoing programs.
Are drones and vehicles supported?
Yes — chassis, hulls, fittings, mounted weapons and mods, with purchases charged against your credits, a repair action, and the free-mod and free-repair perks that certain foci grant.
Can I mix Cities Without Number with Stars Without Number?
Yes. A Custom preset lets you blend modules from Stars, Cities and Worlds Without Number — for example a space game that keeps CWN contacts and hacking.
Does my character save?
Characters are stored in your browser first, so a build survives a refresh and works without an account. Sign in and a character can additionally sync to your account so it follows you between phone and desktop.
